Bio Rifle
A slow green slug that keeps killing long after it hits.
It fires a slow-moving, bio-organic projectile that inflicts a damage-over-time effect on the target, distinguishing it from the instant-hit weapons that dominate the roster. Its deliberate fire rate and lingering poison make it a niche but memorable choice in combat.

Lore & Background
In the world of Unreal, the Bio Rifle is one of several experimental armaments fielded by the warring factions on the planet's fractured continents. Unlike the kinetic or energy weapons that dominate most arsenals, the Bio Rifle hurls a dense, semi-liquid organic mass that bursts on impact and seeps into the target's suit or flesh. The resulting toxin continues to erode health for several seconds after the initial hit, making the weapon punishing in close-quarters brawls where a single graze can compound into a kill. The weapon's slow projectile speed demands lead and patience, a deliberate design choice that sets it apart from the Enforcer or Shock Rifle. In the original Unreal, the Bio Rifle was a single-player weapon only and did not appear in deathmatch arenas. However, it was later included as a standard weapon in both UT99 and UT2004, where its area-of-effect poison could catch multiple opponents clustered around a central objective. Though some players expected it to be dropped from the streamlined rosters of the Tournament entries, Epic instead kept the Bio Rifle, giving it a distinct silhouette and feel alongside the faster, more symmetric weapon sets.
In Their Own Story
The corridor on DM-Command reeked of ozone and burnt polymer. Kael crouched behind the rusted crate, watching two opponents circle the central flag. He didn't have the Shock Rifle. Didn't have the Flak. Just the Bio Rifle, its heavy barrel still warm from the last shot, the green blob hanging in the air like a slow bullet. He exhaled. Squeezed the trigger. The slug drifted, stupidly slow, and the first opponent's back turned just as it crossed the gap. Impact. A wet, gurgling hiss. The blob splattered across the armor and kept eating, the health bar bleeding down in ugly red ticks. The second opponent spun, raised the Enforcer—
Kael was already moving, already reloading, already gone around the corner. Behind him, the second kill ticked in on the scoreboard. Two for the price of one slow green slug.
Reader's Guide
It is found on select deathmatch and deathrun maps as a floor pickup; you do not carry it by default. Its projectile is a slow, visible bio-blob, giving opponents a brief window to react, but the damage-over-time effect means even a glancing hit continues to chip health for several seconds after impact. Tactically, the Bio Rifle rewards positioning and patience. Because the projectile is slow, it is less effective at very close range than the Enforcer or Uzi, and less effective at long range than the Sniper Rifle or Shock Rifle. Its sweet spot is mid-range, where the DoT can punish opponents who are already taking fire from another source. In team or free-for-all play, a single well-placed blob can finish off a wounded opponent who is already bleeding from another weapon. It remains exclusive to the original Unreal's weapon set.
