Ammo
The right clip in the right hand at the right moment is the only law that matters.
Ammo is the core resource and pickup system in the Unreal Tournament franchise, developed by Epic Games. Rather than using a single shared magazine pool, each weapon in Unreal Tournament draws from its own dedicated ammo type—Shock, Flak, Rocket, Bio, Link, and so on. Players must locate the correct pickup on a map to reload, turning resource management into a constant tactical pressure layered on top of the franchise's signature high-speed, physics-driven combat.

Lore & Background
In the world of Unreal Tournament, ammunition is as varied as the weapons that consume it. Shock rounds carry concentrated electromagnetic charge; Flak shells are dense, shaped-charge projectiles; Rocket propellant cartridges are self-contained thruster cells; Bio rounds are bio-engineered projectiles that detonate on proximity; and Link cells are exotic energy nodes that power the Link Gun's chain-reaction blasts. Each type is manufactured by different industrial concerns operating within the tournament circuit, and the visual design of every pickup—its casing color, glow, and silhouette—lets a player identify the correct ammo at a glance during a chaotic firefight.
In Their Own Story
The arena was a cathedral of shattered concrete and sparking conduits. Kael had three rounds left in the Shock Rifle and a Flak Cannon he couldn't reload—no Flak pickup within sight. Two opponents circled the upper catwalk, boots thudding on metal grating. He slid behind a broken pillar, listened to the hum of the arena's power grid, and counted. One. Two. Three seconds. A small amber glow pulsed behind the pillar: a Flak ammo pack, half-buried in rubble. He lunged, snatched it, felt the heavy shells click into the cannon's drum. The circle closed. He fired, and the shaped-charge round turned the catwalk into a rain of molten steel.
Reader's Guide
In Unreal Tournament, ammo is not a universal pool. Each weapon—Enforcer, Shock Rifle, Flak Cannon, Rocket Launcher, Bio Rifle, Link Gun, and others depending on the title—requires its own specific pickup. A Shock ammo pack will not reload your Flak Cannon. Pickups appear as small and large variants on maps; the large pack restores more rounds. In multiplayer, pickups generally respawn after a timed interval, so holding a strategic ammo cache becomes a map-control tactic. Obtaining ammo is purely spatial: you walk over the pickup. There is no crafting, no vendor, no inventory juggling. The tactical question is always *where* the correct clip is and *when* you can safely reach it. In UT99, the Link Gun's unique Link ammo was a rare, high-value pickup that made its holder a priority target. In UT2003 and later titles, the weapon roster shifted and new ammo types appeared, but the per-weapon principle remained. Version-specific changes are mostly in visual design and the specific weapon list rather than in the fundamental mechanic. UT3 and the 2013 title refined pickup animations and added slight visual cues (color coding, glow intensity) to help players identify ammo types faster at speed. The 2024 reboot modernized the models but kept the core rule: find your clip, or fight empty.
Did You Know?
- In Unreal Tournament, each weapon has a completely separate ammo pool; picking up Shock ammo does nothing for your Rocket Launcher, making ammo type identification a split-second skill.
- The Link Gun in the original 1999 Unreal Tournament uses a unique 'Link' ammo type shared by no other weapon, making those pickups extremely contested on maps where they spawn.
- Ammo pickups on multiplayer maps typically respawn after a set timer, turning them into recurring strategic objectives rather than one-time resources.
- The per-weapon ammo system has been a consistent design pillar from the 1999 original through every subsequent Unreal Tournament title, even as weapon rosters and visuals changed.
